Eye cancers, including Retinoblastoma in children and tumours affecting the eyeball, eyelids, or other ocular structures in adults, present unique challenges in both diagnosis and treatment. These cancers are often hereditary, adding a genetic layer to the complexity of their management. Although less than 0.5% of all body cancers are eye cancers, they tend to cause loss of vision & are life-threatening. Specialised treatment is crucial to effectively address these conditions and to provide the best possible outcomes for patients.

To address these challenges, we are thrilled to announce that Shankara Cancer Hospitals, Bangalore has proudly established the “Sri Shankara Centre for Ophthalmic Oncology” on August 25th during the Donors Meet for Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation. This new centre will provide comprehensive care and specialised treatment for patients with eye cancers, reflecting our commitment to delivering expert support and advancing outcomes in this critical area of healthcare.

What is Ophthalmic Oncology ?

Although rare, cancers can develop in the eyeball and surrounding areas, such as the eyelids and orbit. These cancers can impair vision and potentially spread to other organs, making early detection and treatment vital. In children, retinoblastoma is the most common, while adults in India frequently face sebaceous gland carcinoma of the eyelid. With approximately 1,500 new cases of retinoblastoma diagnosed annually in India, prompt intervention is essential to mitigate risks to vision and life.
